Strohauer Farms receives annual average rainfall during just May
The oft-repeated phrase throughout Colorado is “May was wet,” and at fourth-generation Strohauer Farms in LaSalle, CO, north of Denver the month exceeded mere “wet.”
Harry Strohauer, third generation of the farming family, said, “We had a lot of rain in May. We had our average yearly total in just that one month. “
Strohauer said his crops of specialty potatoes will be harvested on schedule, and his onions are slightly later than normal.
Sakata Farms sweet corn ‘looks beautiful’
Coming in about two weeks later than normal, sweet corn from Sakata Farms in Brighton, CO, “looks beautiful,” according to farm founder Bob Sakata.
The longtime Front Range grower, who turned operations over to his son, Robert Sakata, in recent years, said recent heat has brought on good growth in the crop, and harvest will start the last week of July. Rains in the early part of the season delayed planting, but, “We have some awfully good fields coming on now,” he said the third week of June.
Fagerberg’s Kinoshita: Onion crop looking good
The onion harvest will ramp up for Fagerberg Produce in late July, as the company begins with its transplants and then moves to the seeded crop in early September.
“We will have everything in storage by the first week of October,” said Sales Manager Alan Kinoshita.
The company is based in Eaton, CO, and works with a grower network to produce and market conventional and organic onions. Volume is comprised of reds, yellows, whites and some sweet onions.
Hirakata Farms cantaloupe program ‘progressing well’ as plants play catch-up
Heavy spring rains turned out to be too much of a good thing for a major cantaloupe grower’s planting season in Colorado’s lower Arkansas Valley, but by late June Hirakata Farms was seeing its plants catch up.
According to Gene Schneider, sales representative for Hirakata Farms in Rocky Ford, weather from June 1 through the third week had been favorable, with good daytime heat and warm nights.
2015 Potato Festival set for Sept. 11-12
With the dates now set for this year’s annual Potato Festival in Monte Vista, the event will run Friday evening, Sept. 11, and all day Saturday, Sept. 12, and kick off Friday evening with a free dinner and entertainment at Chapman Park.
According to Linda Weyers, assistant director of the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee, Saturday’s activities start at 8 a.m. with the arts & crafts and food fair in Chapman Park. The popular antique tractor display will also be at the park, and free baked potatoes from the San Luis Valley will be served until 5 p.m.
