Sakata Farms sweet corn ‘looks beautiful’
Coming in about two weeks later than normal, sweet corn from Sakata Farms in Brighton, CO, “looks beautiful,” according to farm founder Bob Sakata.
The longtime Front Range grower, who turned operations over to his son, Robert Sakata, in recent years, said recent heat has brought on good growth in the crop, and harvest will start the last week of July. Rains in the early part of the season delayed planting, but, “We have some awfully good fields coming on now,” he said the third week of June.
“We’re heavy in bi-colored,” Sakata continued, noting, “We will ship through September and we’re hoping for a nice, late fall.”
Onions were planted prior to the heavy rains, and Sakata said, “This is one of the most beautiful onion crops we’ve ever had. We’ll have storage onions through the winter and finish up in March. Our sales are handled by Hugh Branch Inc., with agents taking calls here at our Brighton office.”
In addition, Robert Sakata has 100 acres of broccoli this season, and the elder Sakata said that crop will start shipping in mid-July and run through September.
