If you’re looking for a bright red, flavorful heritage beefsteak tomato that harkens back to grandma’s garden, you’ll want to check out Houweling’s Tomatoes.
The company, headquartered in Camarillo, CA, says that its tomatoes provide a brilliant shelf presence and noted differentiation to typical beefsteak tomatoes.
They have ribbed shoulders and deep red color. Houweling’s heritage beefsteaks are also large in size, meaty, juicy and full of flavor.
“In addition, we produce beefsteak and Roma tomatoes, tomatoes on the vine, cocktail, grape, strawberry, cherry and heirloom tomatoes,” said Lindsay Martinez, brand manager for the company. “And we grow long English cucumbers, mini cucumbers and cocktail cucumbers.”
The company produces its line of greenhouse vegetables in its facilities in Delta, BC, Mona, UT, and at its headquarters operation in Camarillo.
“We grow year-round in all of our locations,” noted Martinez. “Our customers are a mix of large retail chains, club channel stores, wholesalers and foodservice operators.
“Primarily we focus our product in western U.S. — from Colorado west to California, and in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada,” she continued. “However, we also have customers as far away as Florida, Hawaii and Alaska.”
Houweling’s Mona farm, which is 80 miles south of Salt Lake City, opened this past winter. It is now shipping fresh, locally grown greenhouse tomatoes to customers in the state and in surrounding markets.
“The 28-acre farm is the first of its kind, capable of growing year round in intense climatic conditions,” explained Martinez. “Sustainability being a key driver in all Houweling’s operations, the Mona farm is situated adjacent to an existing natural gas power plant, which allows the farm to capture previously wasted heat and CO2 for use inside the greenhouse, offsetting the energy intensity requirements of year-round growing.”
The Utah farm is the third location for Houweling’s and has the capacity to expand to over 100 acres under glass.
“Its proximity to Houweling’s existing farms in Delta and Camarillo provides increased regional strength for us in the West, and strategic benefits for consistent supply to customers throughout,” added Martinez.
