Oneonta pear harvest begins early in 2015
The pear harvest is already under way for Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers. “Fruit will be exceptionally early this year. The first harvest was expected the end of July from early areas,” said Director of Marketing Scott Marboe. Bartlett production was expected to ramp up Aug. 5, followed by Starkcrimson.
He said the 2014-15 pear season ended, “mostly well. We had some issues in storage as an industry with scald and so forth. We are looking forward to a much better year this season.”
Some orchards are in transition to organic production.

Forrence Orchards says perfect growing conditions result in perfect apples
Just a couple of degrees in temperature can make a huge difference in the quality and volume that an apple tree produces. Function of elevation, drainage and other issues also affect how a tree blossoms and produces fruit.
Peter Forrence, vice president of Forrence Orchards Inc. in Peru, NY, told The Produce News that all growing conditions, including temperatures, have been perfect at the company’s orchards this year.
Hess Bros. Fruit Co. reports a very manageable apple crop this year
Hess Bros. Fruit Co., in Leola, PA, is in the final phases of purchasing a new building in Lancaster, close to the location it has occupied since 1964.
Fred Hess is the company president. Upon the retirement of his long-time partner and brother, Jerry Hess, in 2012, the company reorganized. With Fred Hess included, the company now has four family member partners. Jerry Hess died last May.

“Sun World has a powerhouse trio of grapes in the fall season with our proprietary red Scarlotta Seedless, green Autumncrisp and black Adora Seedless,” said Gordon Robertson, vice president of sales and marketing.
Hronis: It’s been a good year for grapes, citrus
Hronis Inc., headquartered in Delano, CA, plans to add three additional rooms to cold storage. The rooms will be operational in mid-September.
The family-owned-and-operated company has been farming premium table grapes in the southern San Joaquin Valley since 1945 and added navel oranges to its manifest in 1988.
The company does not work with outside growers. “A family member is involved in all phases of the operation, beginning to end, and we are already starting out our next generation,” the company’s website states.
Giumarra honors Krause with expanded marketing campaign
A marketing campaign launched by Giumarra Bros. Fruit Co. Inc. in 2014 featuring retired grower Helen Krause will be expanded in 2015. “She was initially featured on plum packaging and POP, and we were so successful we decided to expand our marketing campaign to feature her baking expertise with Hachiya persimmons,” said Jeannine Martin, director of sales for Giumarra Reedley. “She will again be featured on packaging and recipe card inserts for our Nature’s Partner consumer pack persimmons available this fall at selected retailers throughout North America.”
