Metro gets sales boost from fresh food
Canadian retail giant Metro saw an increase in sales for its third quarter, with Eric R. La Flèche, president and chief executive officer, giving a lot of credit to fresh food.
Same-store sales were up 4.3 percent, and sales in the third quarter of 2015 totalled $2.96 billion, up 6.1 percent compared to $2.79 billion for the same quarter last year.

Susan McAleavey Sarlund named Northeast account manager at NYAA
Susan McAleavey Sarlund has been named Northeast account manager for the New York Apple Association, succeeding her father, John McAleavey, who died in June.
McAleavey Sarlund previously served as NYAA’s retail account associate for metro New York and the tri-state area, working with her father. Her brother, John McAleavey Jr., will continue to assist the retail account team.
A&P issues layoff notices as it navigates bankruptcy proceedings
Following an inability to reach a compromise on its collective bargaining agreement with the union representing its workers, A&P has issued layoff notifications to workers at all of its stores. The notifications, called Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notifications, or WARN notices, are required by federal law when layoffs are expected within 60 days.
Most A&P locations are still on the market and the retailer hopes to sell them to competitors soon. A judge in the bankruptcy case previously approved the closure of 25 locations.
