New bill seeks to expand USDA’s fresh produce program to frozen, canned varieties
WASHINGTON — A new bill introduced Nov. 5 in the U.S. Senate would open the school fresh fruit and vegetable snack program to frozen, canned, dried and pureed varieties, and may be offered as an amendment to the Childhood Nutrition Reauthorization Act when it’s marked up.
Meijer expands curbside program in Michigan and Ohio
Six months after launching its Meijer Curbside program at the Knapp’s Corner store, the Grand Rapids, MI-based retailer is expanding the convenient shopping service to eight additional stores in Michigan and Ohio.
Washington apple movement on par with previous season
On Nov. 2, Jon DeVaney, president of the Washington State Tree Fruit Association, provided The Produce News with a snapshot of movement for Washington apples.
“As of Nov. 1, there have been 19,570,000 boxes of 2015 crop Washington apples shipped,” he said. “If you take our revised crop estimate from Oct. 1 of 118.4 million boxes, that would be 16.5 percent of the crop shipped — just about the same percentage as at this point last year, and more than the 15.5 percent shipped at this point on the 2013 crop, which was of a similar size of 115 million boxes.”

Ahold USA's Peapod, a leading online grocer, has launched its Fruit & Indulgence Box, which is filled with 24-28 pieces of fresh, seasonal fruit as well as Hershey’s chocolate. The Fruit & Indulgence Box, the first collaboration between Peapod and The Hershey Co., is now available for delivery or pick up in Chicagoland, Milwaukee and Indianapolis areas served by Peapod.
Fresh Produce Association of the Americas convention
The Nogales produce industry convened Nov. 5-7 for the 47th Annual Produce Convention & Golf Tournament of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas. The event was held again at the elegant, scenic and historic Tubac Golf Resort & Spa, in Tubac, AZ. The opening party was held under unseasonably chilly skies.
