Hunts Point event providing 20,000 pounds of produce to community members in need
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the merchants at the Hunts Point Produce Market will come together to host a community event Nov. 14 — Hunts Point Gives Back. The event will provide the neediest members of the Hunts Point community with fresh, healthy, seasonal produce in advance of Thanksgiving.
Working closely with the Community Affairs Unit at NYPD’s 41st Precinct, area elected officials as well as the Hunts Point Produce Market’s “Next Generation Committee,” 2,000 bags containing nearly 20,000 pounds of fresh produce will be assembled and distributed to members of the surrounding community. In addition, rock-jazz pianist ELEW will be performing throughout the day.
“The Hunts Point Produce Market prides itself on being an active and engaged member of the South Bronx community," Joel Fierman, co-president of the board at Hunts Point Produce Market and chairman of the public relations committee, said in a press release. "Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we would like to kick off the holiday season with a gift of fresh produce to be distributed to our neighbors as part of the first annual Hunts Point Gives Back event. We want to thank all of our merchants who have generously donated this fresh produce, as well as our dedicated teams of volunteers from the 41st Precinct and the Hunts Point Next Generation Committee for making this idea a reality.”
The community surrounding Hunts Point Produce Market has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in New York City and is considered one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation. The merchants at the market have banded together to donate produce in order to ensure their neighbors have healthy food on the table for Thanksgiving.
