Washington apple movement on par with previous season
On Nov. 2, Jon DeVaney, president of the Washington State Tree Fruit Association, provided The Produce News with a snapshot of movement for Washington apples.
“As of Nov. 1, there have been 19,570,000 boxes of 2015 crop Washington apples shipped,” he said. “If you take our revised crop estimate from Oct. 1 of 118.4 million boxes, that would be 16.5 percent of the crop shipped — just about the same percentage as at this point last year, and more than the 15.5 percent shipped at this point on the 2013 crop, which was of a similar size of 115 million boxes.”
The harvest of the 2015-16 apple crop began earlier this year and progressed quickly. Many growers, DeVaney stated, expected to conclude their activity by the end of October or early November. With the harvest still under way, he said the Oct. 1 estimate is likely to change as growers get a firmer handle on the total crop size.
