NGA and PMA announce Produce Pavilion at the 2016 NGA Show
The Produce Marketing Association and the National Grocers Association announced that the PMA Produce Pavilion will return for the 2016 NGA Show, to be held Feb. 28- March 2 at the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
For the fifth year, PMA will feature 32 exhibitors from the fresh produce industry within its 3,200-square-foot pavilion at The NGA Show.
New York Produce Show & Conference kicks off
NEW YORK — The sixth annual New York Produce Show & Conference expo took place Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Manhattan's West Side. The event, which kicked off Dec. 1 and wraps up Dec. 3, is co-sponsored by the Eastern Produce Council.

Progressive reporting outstanding crop of organic potatoes
Depending on the season, Los Angeles-based Progressive Produce’s growing regions span California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado and western Canada.
“The quality of our organic potato crop is outstanding this year, and yields are better than expected,” said Scott Leimkuhler, sales manager for the company. “Organic potatoes are more plentiful than they have ever been. The heat lasting longer than normal in the Northwest may affect the quality coming out of storage later in the season, but that is yet to be seen.”
GreenPoint bolsters staff and product volume
Mari Danielson has become the senior sales specialist and business development manager for GreenPoint, LLC. Omar Losolla, director of sales and marketing, said Danielson brings strong experience to “extend and develop our business with national chains.” Danielson worked for eight years for SunFed Produce, LLC, which, like GreenPoint, is based in Rio Rico. For the last year she was the West Coast sales manager for J&J Family of Farms, which is located in Loxahatchee, FL.
Weis Markets receives Grocery Stewardship Certification
Weis Markets, based in Sunbury, PA, announced Dec. 1 that it has been recognized for incorporating sustainability practices into its day-to-day operations, which have helped it conserve resources and reduce the overall environmental impact of its 163 stores, distribution center and manufacturing facilities. It is the second food retailer in the country to receive this recognition.
Topco buyer killed in mountain climbing accident
A tragic climbing accident claimed the life of 32-year-old Tommy Fountain, who fell to his death Nov. 30 on Mount Jefferson in Oregon. Mr. Fountain and his 29-year-old wife, Alison, were climbing Oregon's second-highest peak at the time of the accident.
Supervalu names Eric Claus new CEO of Save-A-Lot
Supervalu Inc. announced that retail veteran Eric Claus has been named the new chief executive officer of Save-A-Lot, the company’s hard-discount grocery segment. Claus, 59, joins the company after spending the past two-plus years as the chairman, president and CEO of Red Apple Stores Inc. He is expected to start in his role with Save-A-Lot on or before Jan. 4, 2016.

NEW YORK — The sixth annual New York Produce Show & Conference, co-sponsored by the Eastern Produce Council, kicked off Tuesday evening, Dec. 1 with an opening reception at the New York Hilton Hotel, here in Midtown Manhattan. The keynote breakfast, expo and other events were scheduled to take place Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Manhattan's West Side.
