Supply gap looms for Western vegetable crops
Short supplies and high prices of Western vegetables through the holidays and well into January were replaced by a supply-exceeds-demand situation for many crops into February. However, a potential gap is looming on the horizon as it appears that the winter deal may come to a conclusion in mid- to late March, prior to the transition for many shippers to the Salinas or Santa Maria valleys.
Whole Foods Market opens newest B.C. store in Burnaby
Whole Foods Market will opened its doors in Burnaby, BC, on Thursday, Jan. 28. The 41,000-square-foot store, located in the Solo District, is the first Whole Foods Market in the city of Burnaby and the fifth store location in British Columbia.
Kroger exec, former VP of perishables, to retire after 44 years
The Kroger Co. announced that Marnette Perry, senior vice president for retail operations and strategic initiatives, plans to retire April 29, after 44 years with the company. Perry held various leadership positions, including director of produce merchandising and procurement, and group vice president of perishables. Her successor will be named at a later date.
New leadership at National Mango Board
Agriculture Secretary Tom J. Vilsack has appointed six members to serve the National Mango Board. The appointees include five new members and one returning member. New members will serve three-year terms beginning immediately upon appointment and ending Dec. 31, 2018; with the exception of new importer from district III whose term will end Dec. 31, 2016.
Google offering fresh grocery delivery
Google has added fresh groceries to its Google Express delivery service. Express was launched in March 2013, at which point it was limited to the San Francisco Bay Area. In response to consumers requesting fresh foods it has now launched a pilot in select Los Angeles and San Francisco neighborhoods so customers can get same-day delivery of fresh produce and other groceries.
PACA sanctions imposed on three, actions filed against Poppell’s Produce
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has imposed sanctions on three produce businesses for failure to pay reparation awards issued under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act. The USDA also filed an administrative action against Poppell’s Produce Inc.
