S. Strock & Co. continues strong at NEPC
Michael Strock’s great-great grandfather, Samuel Strock, founded S. Strock & Co. Inc. in 1897, shortly after emigrating from Germany. Today the company is located at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, MA.
“Samuel Strock began by buying local produce and selling it to customers from a horse-drawn wagon, and he hired a man to help with the deliveries,” said Strock. “Our roots extend to decades earlier, when the market was located at the now historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston.”
Progressive acquires Mission's asparagus business
Progressive Produce Corp. in Los Angeles and Mission Produce Inc. in Oxnard, CA, jointly announced that Progressive has acquired Mission's asparagus business.
The deal, which involves supplies from Mexico and includes the servicing of Mission's customers, is effective immediately and significantly increases Progressive's presence in fresh asparagus.

Taylor Farms recalls broccoli salad kits due to Listeria concern
Taylor Farms in Jessup, MD, is recalling approximately 5,084 pounds of broccoli salad kit products due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The kits contain salad dressing in packets that are the subject of a Food & Drug Administration recall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety & Inspection Service announced.

J. Bonafede Co. traces Boston roots to mid-1900s
J. Bonafede Co. Inc., located at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, MA, was founded in 1912. The company began as a produce company at the market that was then located in downtown Boston. In 1966, officials in the city wanted to renovate the area, and gave businesses within a half-mile-square section orders to evacuate. Produce professionals came together and the New England Produce Center in Chelsea opened in 1968.
Today, J. Bonafede Co. is operated by Eugene Fabio, president, and his brother, Butch, who is treasurer.
