GWA announces plans for annual meeting and queen competition
The Georgia Watermelon Association is currently making plans for its annual meeting and watermelon queen competition to be held Jan. 24- 26 at the Sea Palms Golf & Tennis Resort in St. Simons, GA. The event offers exhibits, networking and recreational opportunities, and educational sessions designed to bring the most up-to-date and relevant information to the watermelon industry.
Retail Stars to be honored at United Fresh 2014
The United Fresh Produce Association is now accepting nominations for the 2014 United Fresh Retail Produce Manager Awards program. The program will honor 25 outstanding retail produce managers at the United Fresh 2014 convention June 10-13 in Chicago.

ProSource Inc. hires Noilyn Hogan
NOILYN HOGAN joined Hailey, ID-based ProSource Inc. as a sales associate earlier this year.
In her new position at ProSource, Hogan focuses primarily on international sales and exports of onions to Mexico, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. She also handles several domestic accounts for onions and potatoes as well.
John Uribe joins Daily Fresh on the sales desk, company picks up new grower
John Uribe, who was previously with Frank’s Distributing in Nogales, AZ, is now on the sales desk at Daily Fresh Distributing Inc. in Nogales, AZ, which is now in its third year. He is “a good addition” to the company, according to President Paul Bachelier, who started Daily Fresh in September 2011 after 18 years with Omega Produce Co.
Uribe has some 40 years’ experience in the produce business, half of that brokering and half on f.o.b. sales, Bachelier said. Before Frank’s, Uribe worked for San Antonio Commission Co. and prior to that worked for Sid Gruber.
Passion for picking serves Wish Farms, charity well
Wish Farms is issuing a challenge to all customers: Create a team of pickers and test your mettle at the first annual Strawberry Picking Challenge Feb. 7-8 in Plant City, FL.
The charity fundraiser will benefit the Redlands Christian Migrant Association, which provides quality childcare and early education for children of migrant farm workers and rural, low-income families throughout Florida.

California Giant Berry Farms and Concord Foods launched a winter baking fresh blueberry promotion Nov. 1 that just came to a close this week. The focus was on winter baking season and the opportunity to include fresh blueberries as a key ingredient in holiday and winter baking recipes using Concord Food products.
Windset Farms bolsters sales team
Matt Modena and Rich Tiveron have joined Delta, BC-based Windset Farms, a grower of greenhouse produce. Modena will be based in California to help manage customer accounts in the Western U.S., while Tiveron, who will be based at Windset Farms’ headquarters in British Columbia, will support sales in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
FirstFruits marketing pledges $20,000 to Philippine relief efforts
FirstFruits Marketing has pledged to contribute two containers of emergency supplies, valued at $20,000, to support relief efforts following the recent devastation from Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
One month after the typhoon, it is estimated that 6,000 people have been killed and 12 million were affected, with many left homeless and without food and safe drinking water.
