LeRoy Giannini, owner of Giannini Packing Corp., a pioneer in the California nectarine industry, and for 30 years chairman of the Nectarine Administrative Committee, died April 15 in a hospital in Visalia, CA, just a few miles from his home in Dinuba. He was 87.
Onion market drops a bit but remains hot
The Federal-State Market News Service reported in mid-April that 50-pound sacks of yellow onions had an f.o.b. price near $30, while a limited supply of white onions was still topping $50 per 50-pound sack. These prices are not much different than they were six weeks ago and even before that.
While the dollar figures themselves are remarkable, what makes this such a compelling story is that the market has remained at this unusually high level for such a long period of time.
PMA activates largest grassroots campaign for AgJOBS
WASHINGTON -- Starting the week of April 23, the Produce Marketing Association plans to activate the group's largest grassroots campaign to convince Congress of the dire labor crisis that is affecting not only producers but also every player in the produce supply chain.
Dubbed "Empty Shelves, Empty Plates," the campaign is aimed at getting the produce industry -- particularly buyers -- engaged in calling on Congress to support the Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits & Security Act of 2007, also known as AgJOBS.

Southern Specialties launches 'Paradise' tropicals line
Southern Specialties, based in Pompano Beach, FL, has launched its "Paradise" tropicals branded line. The name "Paradise" will be used as part of the product identification for the company's mangos, papayas, avocados and limes. More products will be added to the line in the near future.

Breech retiring as CEO of Pandol Bros. after 25 years with firm
Pandol Bros. Inc. in Delano, CA, announced April 16 that the company has initiated a search for a new chief executive officer to replace Jack Breech, who will be retiring from the company.
The Pandol family hired Mr. Breech in 2001 "to help transition the company from its entrepreneurial roots to professional management and financial discipline," according to a company press release.
However, Mr. Breech had been involved with Pandol family businesses in other capacities already.
After short Mexican grape crop last year, similar volume to 2005 expected
While no official estimates on the 2007 grape crop in Sonora, Mexico, had yet been released, several of the distributors in Nogales, AZ that The Produce News interviewed, as well as a spokesperson for the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, expect the volume of fresh table grapes exported to the United States from Mexico in 2007 to be similar to two years ago.
Near record numbers for 2007 NEPC expo
The New England Produce Council's 2007 Produce & Floral Expo may break its record for number of exhibitors, according to Laura Sullivan, the executive director of the group, which is based in Burlington, MA.
She said April 9 that "the show is selling very well." With 220 exhibitors already signed up, the numbers for the April 25 show in Boston may surpass last year's record participation.
Exhibitors again this year will be produce and floral companies offering wares to New England retailers.
Mark Goodman joins Save-A-Lot
Save-A-Lot, a leading U.S. grocery chain with 1,200 stores nationwide, has announced that Mark Goodman has been appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer.
