Hot weather boosts calls from Fresh Buyers Inspections customers
The effect of heat on grapes is dependent on many factors, including the way grapes are farmed. But buyers who “have been around a while” know that a prolonged stretch of very high temperatures in the growing areas “can contribute to having some issues later on,” said Kevin Beno, owner of Fresh Buyers Inspections Inc. in Visalia, CA, Aug. 8.
Market not yet affected by cantaloupe recall
The late July recall of both cantaloupes and honeydews by a North Carolina grower-shipper because of the finding of Listeria monocytogenes in the packing facility has not had an impact on the overall marketing of the product at this point, according to a California shipper.
Steve Patricio, president of Westside Produce in Firebaugh, CA, told The Produce News Aug 15 that “the general marketplace has slowed recently, but I don’t think the recall of the North Carolina melons has affected our sales at all.”

Income the major factor that drives asparagus sales
The biggest single factor that seems to point to increased asparagus consumption is household income. While there are some geographic variances as well as difference between the genders and marital status of consumers, how much money a household makes appears to have the most influence.
Acreage, volume on the rise for Eagle Eye Produce
Eagle Eye Produce Inc. has stepped up its potato production this season. “We increased acreage over last year to meet customer demand and be able to run additional promotional campaigns,” Director of Marketing Nate Klingler told The Produce News July 31.
Alpine Fresh adds efficiency in growing operation
For the 2012 growing season, Alpine Fresh Inc. has changed its irrigation practices in Peru to become more efficient in an effort to save water and ultimately decrease costs.
“We have changed the way we irrigate our asparagus,” said Walter Yager, president of the Miami-based company. “This has resulted in a 30 percent savings on water. Where a particular well used to irrigate 100 acres, we are now irrigating 130 acres with the same amount of water.”

Texas Produce Association changes name to Texas International Produce Association
The Texas Produce Association will now be known as the Texas International Produce Association to more accurately reflect the nature of the produce industry in the Lone Star State.
