The content-rich app features numerous interactive games, customizable photos, fun quizzes, a sweepstakes and hundreds of recipes to engage users and reward them with loyalty points that can be redeemed for a variety of "Chiquita" brand merchandise.
Sprouts Farmers Market and Hillphoenix push sustainable alternative
Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market is entering the Southeast in a big way. With one of its first stores in the metro-Atlanta area, the healthy grocery store chain is bringing one of the first CO2-based, HFC-free supermarket refrigeration systems to a warm-weather market in North America. The transition to CO2 as a sustainable alternative for supermarket refrigeration is booming in cold climate markets, with roughly 2,000 transcritical CO2 systems operating worldwide in cold weather cities.
George Tanimura's 100th birthday celebration
George Tanimura of Tanimura & Antle celebrated his milestone centennial birthday this weekend. Family, business partners and friends joined together to honor Tanimura at a gala dinner, which was held at the Tanimura & Antle home ranch. Eight skydivers jumped from 8,000 feet, streaming smoke trails and colorful banners on their way down to greet the event's 600 guests.
Association moving quickly to address industry needs
The Colorado Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association is showing itself to be a driving force, unifying agricultural producers and industry partners under a common banner. The association incorporated this past January with a common goal of being a "portal for communication among fruit and vegetable growers around the state, big and small," according to the association's president, Robert T. Sakata.

Family, business partners and friends joined together to honor the highly regarded Salinas family farmer and patriarch of the Tanimura family. The event commemorated his extraordinary life journey, including his dedication to the California and Arizona farming industry.
Nature Fresh Farms to expand successful organic line
Nature Fresh Farms recently added organic bell peppers to its product offering, and the line has been so successful, the company plans to double its current five-acre production next year. Nature Fresh is also doing trials for various types of tomatoes and will eventually branch out into cucumbers, zucchini and eggplant.
Chief Executive Officer Peter Quiring said the move was in response to customer demand. “We saw the growth in the category and it wasn’t slowing down. Organic does not seem to be a passing fad. Some of the retailers we deal with were asking for it.”

Water is Colorado's wildcard
There's nothing black and white about conditions in Colorado where water is concerned. But Colorado State Engineer Dick Wolfe said it isn't hard to characterize the situation. "It's a tale of two extremes," he told The Produce News. "We are way above average in the northwestern part of the state. In the Southwest, it's clearly a different story."

Roundy’s closing distribution center, eliminating jobs
Roundy’s Inc., a leading grocer in the Midwest, announced the closure of its Stevens Point, WI, distribution facility. Several reports noted that Roundy's contacted the Department of Workforce Development to inform it that the 196 employees working at the facility would be laid off by Sept. 13.
The company operates 174 retail grocery stores and 110 pharmacies under the Pick ’n Save, Rainbow, Copps, Metro Market and Mariano’s retail banners in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.
