Giant Eagle, one of the nation’s larger food retailers and distributors, announced that it will discontinue operations of its discount grocery chain throughout western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio. All eight of the company’s Good Cents Grocery + More locations will cease operations by the close of business on Thursday, March 26.

Stay the course: goal of new NMB executive
Manuel Michel, the new executive director of the National Mango Board, was hired last September just as the board was completing the work of updating its strategic plan, which it does every three years.
Michel spent his first four months on the job shadowing William Watson, the founding chief executive officer of NMB, to allow for a smooth transition. In the spring of 2014 Watson had announced his intentions to step down from the position at the end of the year.

FPAA dedicates salad bar to Ariz. school
The Fresh Produce Association of the Americas announced the dedication of salad bar equipment to San Cayetano Elementary School in Rio Rico, AZ, as part of the Let’s Move Salad Bars 2 School program. The dedication occurred Feb. 17 at the San Cayetano Elementary School and included school representatives, members of the FPAA and Rep. Raul Grijalva.

Nature Fresh Farms joins PMA’s eatbrighter! campaign
Nature Fresh Farms, headquartered in Leamington, ON, has recently signed on to the Produce Marketing Association eatbrighter! campaign in association with “Sesame Street.” The company will be developing strategic packaging with key “Sesame Street” characters to encourage kids of all ages to make healthier choices and to #eatbrighter. A formal announcement will be released to the trade in late February with a product unveiling scheduled for March
Roundy’s president to deliver keynote address at United Fresh 2015
Robert A. Mariano, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Roundy’s Inc. in Milwaukee, WI, will address leading produce retail industry executives at the United Fresh 2015 opening general session June 9 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
Mariano started out in the retail grocery business at the age of 17, working as a part-time deli clerk at Dominick’s Finer Foods. In 1995 he became president and CEO of Dominick’s. Under his leadership, the company became a top performing regional supermarket chain.
