Village Farms expands existing line with ‘True Rebel’ tomato mix
There is always a lot going on at Village Farms LP. The Heathrow, FL-based company recently expanded its “Olde World Flavor” collection with “True Rebel Mix,” a unique combination of four to six different flavorful plump tomato varieties.
“Each variety has a distinct shape and flavor,” Douglas Kling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said. “The mix combines a selection of brilliant colors that range from red, orange, yellow, green and brown, providing a rainbow of high color distinction. And each is deliciously sweet and intense with flavor. Our tagline, ‘A revolution in flavor,’ describes the mix perfectly.”
Kling said Village Farms has over 70 tomato varieties in trial at all times in its greenhouses, and the “True Rebel Mix” clamshell contains the best quality of the trials. The varieties in the package are continually changing, but at the same time the selection is always loaded with color, flavor and sweetness.
Village Farms’ ‘True Rebel Mix’ combines four to six different flavorful tomato varieties.“The reaction from consumers and retailers has been exceptional,” added Kling.
The company will launch some very strong items within the next year. Two are snacking tomatoes that the company is very excited about.
“We have exclusive agreements with the seed companies on these tomatoes,” said Kling. “They are extremely colorful and feature a strong aroma and exceptional flavor. The tomatoes will be introduced at the Southeast Produce Council’s Southern Exposure expo in late February, and we’re posed for the launch in March.” Until the introduction, the names of the new tomatoes are under wraps.
Village Farms continues to make waves with its “Heavenly Villagio Marzano” tomato, which is also exclusive to the company. It boasts that one taste of these juicy bite-size morsels will send you straight to heaven. They are perfect for salads or as a stuffed appetizer. Picked at the peak of vine-ripened flavor from the company’s earth-friendly greenhouses, they offer pleasing garden-fresh flavor.
In addition to its corporate headquarters, Village Farms has greenhouses, growing partners and distribution centers in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, enabling it to ship high-quality greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet Bell peppers year-round. It is currently shipping out of British Columbia, Texas and Pennsylvania.
Kling said the company recently completed the installations of five acres of lights at its Permian Basin greenhouse in Texas. “We grow long English cucumbers there, and the natural light is lower in the winter,” he said. “The new lights are giving the crop a real boost. We’re shipping from there now.
“Last June we closed on our acquisition of Maxim Power in British Columbia,” Kling continued. “The new name of the acquired company is VF Clean Energy Inc. The facility that Village Farms acquired as part of the acquisition will continue generating power under an existing long term power purchase agreement with BC Hydro as well as focus on improving the sustainability profile of Village Farms’ greenhouse operations in Delta, British Columbia.”
The acquisition makes Village Farms one of the more sustainable companies in the greenhouse industry today.
“We’re now able to take methane gas out of our landfill and recycle it for maximum power,” Kling added.
