Auerbach: Peruvian asparagus season tending toward smaller sizes
Dynamics in the marketplace will be interesting this season as Peruvian asparagus moves into the domestic pipeline. “There are two factors affecting Peruvian asparagus,” said Paul Auerbach, president of Maurice A. Auerbach Inc. in Secaucus, NJ, in mid-July. “There is light production in Peru, so volume is on the low side. Production is running toward smaller sizes.”

Bernardi expecting strong tomato market
Largely because of lack of supplies caused by the drought, California has experienced a very good, mature green tomato deal this summer, and longtime observer Joe Bernardi expects an even stronger market in the late summer, early fall period.

Despite the Mexican deal having much more volume than anticipated when the harvest began in the Bakersfield area in late June, Pandol said “we’ve had very robust demand. There was an overlap (between Mexican and Coachella production and that of the San Joaquin Valley), but it was not problematic.”
