South Carolina peach crop is bountiful and juicy as harvest moves into high gear
COLUMBIA, SC — Supermarket produce departments can bank on an excellent volume of quality South Carolina peaches this summer, affirmed Martin Eubanks, South Carolina Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture, in a mid-July interview here. He is a 28-year veteran of the department and an old hand at riding the weather roller-coaster for produce crops.
Piazza Produce to host the Taste of Piazza 2015
The Taste of Piazza 2015 will be held Aug. 25 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The event is presented every other year by Piazza Produce Inc. The first show was held in 2009, making this the fourth such Taste of Piazza.

Pear prospects prime at Stemilt
Stemilt Growers LLC couldn’t have ordered up a better pear season. “We’ve experienced higher-than-normal temperatures this spring which will bode well for summer varieties like Bartlett, which size up nicely in warm weather. Harvest will start about 10 days earlier than normal in early August thanks to an early spring and bloom,” said Director of Marketing Roger Pepperl.
Preconditioned pears boost Rainier at retail
Andy Tudor, director of business development at Rainier Fruit Co., said the company’s preconditioned pear program continues to drive more sales at retail outlets. “Once consumers try conditioned pears, research shows they buy more often. The key is getting the preconditioned message to the consumer,” he told The Produce News.
Pear pouch presents CMI with expanded marketing opportunities
Hotter-than-normal temperatures in the Pacific Northwest are expected to reduce pear sizing for Columbia Marketing International this season. “Our horticulturists tell us that pear size is down one to two sizes from normal,” said Steve Castleman, senior vice president of sales.
Cranberry growers vote to continue marketing order
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that cranberry growers voted to continue their federal marketing order program. The marketing order applies to cranberries grown in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin. It also applies to cranberries grown in Long Island, NY.
