More than a decade ago, the potato growers of Washington state determined that the best way to spend their promotion dollars was to spread the good story that agriculture has to tell.

Bread goes back as far as 30,000 years ago, but it was not until 1928 that bread was sliced on the first commercial machine in Missouri by Otto Rohwedder. Bakers at that time were skeptical about slicing bread, claiming it was just a fad.

In the sixth century B.C., a popular plant called lettuce was served in a leafy form on the tables of Peruvian kings. Today, this same lettuce has been nurtured into sophisticated packages of fresh-cut salad blends and displayed in produce departments for consumers.

In the era just before streaming service subscriptions emerged, and when CDs were purchased at malls, there was a groundbreaking and revolutionary time for music known as the Napster Age. While not as historically significant as the Bronze or Iron Age, those who lived through it remember it vividly.

“The market is strong on sweets and there’s a lot of demand, so we’re excited about that,” said Jessica Peri, retail sales manager for the Yerington, NV-based company. “We have the conventional Sweetie Sweets and organic Sweetie Sweets coming available.”

Nearly 90 percent of all strawberries grown in the United States originate from California, and generations of dedicated farmers continue to produce their crops in healthy, sustainable ways. In fact, more organic strawberries are grown in California than anywhere in the world.

The California Strawberry Commission represents more than 300 strawberry growers, shippers and processors, all working together to advance strawberry farming for the future.

As part of its ongoing support of local farms throughout its marketing area, Big Y Markets have once again pledged to help aid those farmers impacted by recent floods in the region. Big Y has pledged $25,000 to the Massachusetts Farm Resiliency Fund as set up by Governor Healey’s administration and Ashley Randle, Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources commissioner. Big Y’s support in Connecticut will be finalized soon.
