Kevin Donovan, national sales manager for Phillips Mushroom Farms in Kennett Square, PA, told The Produce News that the company is finding that foodservice operators are using more Shiitake, Portabella and Crimini mushrooms.

Claudia Wenzing, who is well known for her work in forging partnerships with produce companies at the United Fresh Produce Association and, before that, the Produce for Better Health Foundation, retired July 15.

Ms. Wenzing left her post after three years serving as United Fresh’s vice president of business development, and the association has yet to make a final decision on restaffing the position, said Ray Gilmer, United Fresh’s vice president of communications.

“She saw this as an opportunity to spend time with a new grandchild,” he said.

David J. Elliot Jr., owner of David J. Elliot & Sons in the Sacramento River-Delta area of California, died at home in Courtland, CA, June 26 following a short illness, surrounded by his family. He was 79.

OTTAWA -- Canada and the European Union have reached a historic agreement to recognize each other's organic standards and laws after nearly four years of formal negotiation.

Pegi Adam, director of communications for the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council in Clayton, NJ, told The Produce News in late June that the council has been looking for ways to get grocery stores to push Jersey peaches more strongly and to promote them longer into the season.

Mike Cochran, vice president of Robt. T. Cochran & Co. Inc. at the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, NY, joined his father’s business in 2003. Today, the 29-year-old is well acclimated to the produce industry, including the often tedious work schedule and long hours.
