Frigid temperatures in Florida are expected to affect crops throughout the Sunshine State.

“Some Florida crops are better prepared than others for the cold,” said Mark Campbell, founder and CEO of ProduceIQ. “Cucurbits, such as cucumbers and squash, are susceptible to cold and don’t need freezing temps to have reductions in yield. Likewise, green beans prefer the warmth.”

The last weekend of January is expected to see temperatures flirting with freezing in Florida’s strawberry production area near Plant City. Combined with rain during the Jan. 23-29 week, strawberry production is expected to be tight heading into the Valentine’s Day pull.

The newly released USDA forecast for Florida citrus is has changed from what it released in October. According to the USDA, all orange production is estimated at 46 million boxes, down 1 million boxes from the October forecast. If realized, this will be 13 percent less than last season’s final production.

The estimate for grapefruit production was increased to 4.1 million boxes, up about 300,000, and would equal last season’s production. The tangerine and tangelo estimate remained unchanged from October at 900,000 boxes.

“Florida goes from now until we start winding down around the first of April,” said W. Calvert Cullen IV, president of the company, which also has operations in, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and Michigan.
