HLB Specialties, a leading papaya importer and distributor based in Pompano Beach, FL, has launched a campaign to educate buyers about Formosa papayas, also known as Tainung papayas.
As the company approaches its 25th year in existence, the challenge of educating buyers and consumers about their products still remains, according to Sales Director Lorenz Hartmann de Barros, and HLB Specialties hopes to simplify customers' lives by turning them into informed purchasers.

Curry/Suncrest partnership seals sweet deal for Peruvian onions
The partnership announced between Curry & Co. and Suncrest Produce Solutions LLC is expected to provide both businesses with a marketplace advantage this season.
“Our customers want sweet onions year-round, and this partnership with Suncrest Produce strengthens our existing sweet onion program and will triple or even quadruple our Peruvian import volumes,” Curry & Co. President Matt Curry said in May when the partnership was announced.
Hess Bros. Fruit Co. heading into great season with new partnership
On Aug. 7, Fred Hess, co-owner of Hess Bros. Fruit Co. in Lancaster, PA, said that the company’s crop condition was in very good shape this year.
“It looks like we’ll be slightly down this year in volume, but it’s pretty comparable to a year ago,” Hess said. “The fruit size looks good. We’ve had lots of rain, and apple trees like a lot of moisture this time of year. Some of the early varieties are coloring on nicely.”
Peppadew Fresh pitching in to help Farmers Against Hunger
Peppadew Fresh, the Morganville, NJ-based operation that produces fresh Peppadew Gold peppers, has joined with the charitable organization Farmers Against Hunger to benefit area residents in need.
Farmers Against Hunger started in 1996 as a way for farmers throughout New Jersey to contribute extra produce to those in need. The organization uses volunteers to pack and transport the surplus product to food banks and pantries, thus relieving farmers from those duties.
Curry & Co. expands South American fruit program with formation of Curry Fruit Chile SA
Curry & Co.'s is ramping up its year-round berry program with the formation of Curry Fruit Chile SA in Santiago, Chile.
Curry Fruit Chile SA will be responsible for the growth and development of all South American product being shipped to Curry & Co. in North America and to customers in Europe and Asia, according to a press release announcing the new division, which will focus on quality fruit, an efficient distribution network, and grower relations in Chile, Argentina and Peru.
Mushroom sales exceed $1 billion in value for third consecutive year
The value of domestic mushroom production topped $1 billion for the third in a row, according to a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture report.
The approximately 895 million-pound crop from 2012-13 shows an overall 14 percent increase in production since 2009-10.
DNE expands Florida program
DNE World Fruit LLC, based in Ft. Pierce, FL, added to its list of packinghouses by signing contracts with Premier Citrus Packers LLC in Vero Beach, FL, and John Stephens Inc. in Frostproof, FL.
Last year Premier Citrus packed approximately 1 million cartons of Florida grapefruit and John Stephens packed about 420,000 cartons of Florida citrus, with a mix of tangerines, Navels, juice oranges and grapefruit.
