James Wood, former A&P CEO, dies at 85
James Wood, the former chief executive officer credited with the turnaround of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., died Thursday, March 26 after a long illness. He was 85.
Mr. Wood was born in 1930 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom, which is where he began a storied career in food retailing. From 1965 to 1980, he was a senior executive at Cavenham Foods and the CEO of Cavenham’s international retail operations.

California onion deal filled with uncertainty
California will start shipping some onions in early April from Mexico and begin with its own shipments from the Imperial Valley toward the latter part of the month. The early-season onions are expected to be in good supply, but when the harvest moves to the San Joaquin Valley, lack of rain and good water could play a major role in decreased supplies.
National Peanut Board conducting agencies review for campaigns
The National Peanut Board, a farmer-funded research and promotion program for U.S.-grown peanuts, will conduct an agencies review of its advertising, marketing and public relations campaigns this summer in Atlanta.
The board has a comprehensive approach to providing the most beneficial opportunities for U.S. peanut growers to succeed in domestic and global markets, supported by their brand, “The Perfectly Powerful Peanut.”
CPMA's 90th annual trade show sells out

Central American Produce experiencing ‘outstanding’ mango season
Central American Produce Inc., based in Pompano Beach, FL, is having an “outstanding” mango season, according to company president Michael Warren.
“We are receiving beautiful Tommy’s from Nicaragua and Mexico, and will be starting our Guatemalan program by mid-March,” he told The Produce News on March 10. “We are expecting good volumes and are offering great promotions right through the spring.”
