United Natural Foods Inc. has awarded more than $1 million in grant funding to improve food systems in more than 40 communities across the United States and Canada. Food access is a key pillar of UNFI’s Better for All initiative and, for the third consecutive year, the UNFI Foundation has committed over $1 million to non-profit organizations to help create equitable food access in vulnerable communities.

Organics Unlimited, a San Diego-based grower and distributor of organic tropical fruit, is celebrating its 17th annual GROW Month in September.

The company will highlight its GROW program which focuses on social responsibility. These efforts include promoting sustainability, education and health care to underserved communities in banana growing regions of Mexico and Ecuador through the sale of GROW label organic bananas.

The 2022 New Jersey potato season has been characterized by good growing conditions, good yields, good quality and good pricing, according to Ron Budd, vice president of Gloucester County Packing Corp. in Woodbury, NJ.

“Up until early July, we had near-perfect growing conditions, an ample amount of rain and cool nights, which potatoes like,” Budd said Friday morning, Aug. 12. “But then in mid-July it turned hot and dry, but it didn’t really affect potato growers as much because they all have irrigation and were able to finish off the crop nicely.”

Produce veteran Mike Madden started Macadu Fresh in March of 2021, a company focused on growing, importing and distributing quality fresh fruits from its headquarters in Vineland, NJ, as well as a space in Miami.

“We have an office and warehouse in both, but the warehouse in Miami through our partner is mainly into flowers, though we have access to 100,000 square feet there,” he said. “We are in the process of hiring a salesman to work out of the Miami office.”
