PHILADELPHIA — Moving to the new Philadelphia terminal market will involve having John Vena Inc. expand its product line, said company owner John Vena.

But an expanded line doesn’t necessarily require a buying program that extends beyond the walls of the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market.

Mr. Vena was frank in his evaluation of his business and where it needs to go. “We have identified customer segments within which we have not done a good job,” he said.

PHILADELPHIA — Enthusiastic about the opportunities of the information highway, Tom Kovacevich III, is speeding in the fast lane. Mr. Kovacevich, generally known as “Tommy K,” is general manager of T.M. Kovacevich-Philadelphia Inc.

On March 2, he released a “Best Fruit Now 1.0.0” app for iPhones. The “Best Fruit Now” website for the app is www.bestfruitnow.com. The same app for Android smart phones will soon be on the market. The work was done with technical consulting from Mr. Kovacevich’s partner, Séamus Devitt.

PHILADELPHIA — The future of T.M. Kovacevich-Philadelphia Inc. is very bright, with the June 5 move to the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market.

Tom Kovacevich III, general manager of the firm known as TMK, said the new market “has exceeded all expectations. That is the most appropriate statement. The efficiencies we have gained are unbelievable. The old facility we had was outgrown 15 years ago. We didn’t understand how much more efficient we could be if we had room to work. Deliveries are faster and getting orders to customers are much faster.”

The opening of the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market is like reaching “the promised land,” according to Mike Maxwell, president of Procacci Bros. Sales Corp. Inc. in Philadelphia.

“This is something we been waiting for for a very long time,” he told The Produce News June 21. “It is better than expected and we are very pleased with the new market. It was worth the wait. We are very pleased with the final result. We look forward to being in our new home and doing a lot of business there.”

PHILADELPHIA — “I am back in the groove working,” said Jimmy Storey, owner of Quaker City Produce on the Philadelphia produce market.

As reported June 13 in The Produce News, Mr. Storey returned to work June 5 at the new terminal market, here, after spending almost six months in the hospital. He was so sick that “I don’t remember December or January. I almost died twice. I had a round-trip ticket to Hell.”

Philadelphians are not alone in celebrating their new terminal market.
