As the coastal California growing season rapidly winds down the roller coaster in temperatures looks to continue. Cooler temperatures, winds and light rainfall last week will not help any of the remaining crops in the Salinas Valley.

Big Y Foods Inc. announced the grand reopening of its supermarket at 1090 St. James Ave., Springfield, MA on Thursday, Oct. 31. The project included major renovations in many areas of the store and various new additions in response to changing customer preferences. After months of planning and construction, the remodeled store now features upgraded décor, flooring and finishes throughout the building. The exterior facade was also given a more modern look.

The American Floral Endowment announced the launch of a $2.5 million fundraising campaign to support Sustainabloom, a collaborative sustainability program created for the floral community. Initially established with seed funding from 10 forward-thinking organizations, Sustainabloom has expanded significantly providing sustainability resources for the industry.

As always, the Party with the Partners at the 98th Western Growers Annual Meeting was a lively networking event. Held at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, it brought together growers, shippers and suppliers in a relaxed yet energetic atmosphere. With food, live music and comfortable areas for mingling, the setting fostered meaningful conversations and discussions between new friends and old partners.

Dollar Tree Inc. Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling has stepped down from his position. Michael C. Creedon Jr., chief operating officer, has been appointed interim CEO while Edward (Ned) J. Kelly III, lead independent director, has been elected chairman. The board is conducting a search process to identify a permanent CEO, which will include internal and external candidates.
