The National Potato Council unveiled a new commodity-specific food-safety guide that NPC President John Keeling says will help maintain the commodity's safety record for those growers who follow the new template.

"We have a very good food-safety record," Keeling said, announcing the new, 67-page commodity-specific food-safety guidelines for the production, harvest, storage and packing of potatoes, during a Nov. 8 webinar.

New York Apple Sales is the marketing arm for Empire Fruit Growers Co-op, which represents numerous apple growers that are spread across New York state.

Kaari Stannard, president of the cooperative, explained that last year’s New York Produce Show had excellent results and a great turnout.

“You bet we’re exhibiting at the upcoming New York Produce Show,” said Jim Allen, president of the New York Apple Association in Fishers, NY. “As a supporting sponsor, we have exhibited at the show since it began.

“Each year this show expands,” he continued. “It is the premier regional show in the Northeast, and it is rated as the second largest next to only the PMA Fresh Summit. After all, it is being held in the ‘Big Apple.’”

“I will be attending the New York Produce Show on behalf of JemD Farms,” said Jim DiMenna, president of JemD Farms headquartered in Leamington, Ontario. “Our sales program manager, Doug Grabosky, will also be joining me. We did exhibit in the past, but on the heels of the PMA Fresh Summit, and with so many people to talk to at the New York Show, we decided to focus on those one-to-one conversations. There’s a lot going on at JemD Farms today, and we want to get the word out.”

Bill Litvin, vice president of sales and national account manager for Giorgio Fresh headquartered in Temple, PA, said that the company has exhibited at every New York Produce Show since its inception, and this year is no exception. The company will be at Booth No. 448 at Pier 94 on Dec. 10-12.

“This is a great show with outstanding support from the retail community and the grower-shipper side,” said Litvin. “And New York City is certainly a pull for people because of the festive time of the year.”
