With the onset of summer, Mountain View Fruit showcased its premium peaches, plums and nectarines at the Summer X Games in Ventura, CA. These fruits were distributed to VIP attendees, athletes and media, serving as a refreshing and nutritious snack option throughout the event.

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture reports that yellow flesh peaches comprise 90 percent of New Jersey’s output of peaches, white flesh varieties make up 4 percent and the newer doughnut, or flat peaches, are still only a blip in overall production at 1 percent.

The New Jersey Peach Promotion Council funds research on new peach and nectarine variety development and the handling in storage and market.

New Jersey ranks fourth nationally for peach production, after California, South Carolina and Georgia. Overall, the state has more than 100 varieties of peaches and produces over 60 million pounds a year.

Cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, nectarines and... peacherines? In the early 1900s, J. W. Philippi, a horticulturist, combined a peach with a nectarine, and presto — he developed peacherines, a stone fruit with an old-fashioned flavor and a pinch of citrus taste.

The summer brings many things to many people. To me, it means the reintroduction to an array of favorite fruits.

Around this time of year watermelon often gets top billing in the produce aisle, but retailers best not forget another summer favorite: stone fruit. I know my eyes light up when I see that first white peach display in the supermarket.

It seems I am not alone.
