Officials at Maine Farmers Exchange simply want their customers to talk about what they offer and the job they do. That word-of-mouth advertising should be enough to keep the Presque Isle, ME-based wholesaler humming along quite well for a very long time.

Established in 1958 by Lawrence Thibodeau or Tib, the exchange has developed a sterling reputation in the industry by offering its customers a consistent supply of potatoes for use as seed, eating or processing.

Idaho and Eastern Oregon comprise a great deal of the onion supply in the United States. Idaho farmers regularly grows more than 10,000 acres of onions, while Oregon is above 21,000 acres annually.

That is the state of the potato category, a market that the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Cornell University say is producing dollar sales gains that are increasing by more than 10 percent annually. The reason: consumers see potatoes as a healthy option, tasty, different uses, easy to prepare and, perhaps most importantly, relatively inexpensive, especially during times of high inflation.
