A Georgia farmer named Mose Coleman accidentally discovered a sweet onion variety in the 1930s. Since then, Georgia's sweet onion production — and popularity — has grown. The Vidalia Onion Act passed in 1986 and a trademark was granted for the name. The Vidalia onion became Georgia’s state vegetable in the 1990s.

As announced by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Vidalia Onion Committee, today marks the official start of Vidalia sweet onion season. Bland Farms has completed its first round of harvesting and will begin shipping to retailers nationwide.

Bland Farms' Vidalia sweet onions will be available through early October for the first time in years. This extended season is a rare opportunity for consumers to enjoy these coveted sweet onions well beyond the typical season, just in time for Labor Day grilling and fall recipes.

Shuman Farms has had a successful start to the Vidalia onion shipping season, marked by a series of events with partners Food Lion and Royal Food Service.

The Georgia Agriculture Commissioner and Vidalia Onion Committee revealed the start of the 2024 Vidalia onion season as April 17. The official pack date gives companies like Bland Farms the greenlight to ship everyone's favorite sweet onion to nationwide retailers.
