Weisinger looking for flat tomato market to pick up
ChuckWeisinger, president of Weis-Buy Inc., provided The Produce News with some insights into the tomato market as of Nov. 10.
“It seems that heavy rains on early November tomatoes in southwest Florida affected the size of mature green tomatoes,” Weisinger stated. “The size seemed to be smaller than anticipated with the start of harvesting on Nov. 5.”
While weather has cut into production in all areas, he went on to say, “Business was lackluster, even with the lack of total production. We feel that the market will get better in all areas, simply because of the lack of production and the concentration of produce in fewer hands. We feel that the termination of harvesting in Georgia and northern Florida, and the incipient rains in California will make a significant difference in pricing and demand.”
By the end of November, Weisinger expects to see better demand as well as a shortage of fresh fruit. “Our Dominican Roma deal should be in better supplies, and the volume should increase by Dec. 1. Weis-Buy’s place-pack deal in south Florida will kick in, and we should have ability to supply size and quantity for orders placed.”
