Wal-Mart adds bagged Pink Lady apples for February promo
Valentine's Day took on an added dimension this year when Wal-Mart, the nation's largest food retailer, introduced bagged "Pink Lady" brand apples to its produce departments.
The limited-time promotion was detailed by Pink Lady America Director of Marketing Alan Taylor, who told The Produce News that Wal-Mart "made available another option in its selection of Valentine's Day presents, a selection that already included flowers, gift baskets, personalized gifts, candy, fragrances and lingerie."
Referring to Pink Lady's familiar Flowing Heart logo, Mr. Taylor said, "Not only do the Pink Lady apples offer the benefit of being a fresh and nutritional product, but the specially designed bags holding the fruit are also 'dressed up' for this most romantic of holidays."
The three-pound bags are shipped in both 12- and 14-bag cartons, Mr. Taylor said.
"In either case, the customer at retail can easily fill his or her shopping cart with special Valentine Day's gifts," he said.
Mr. Taylor noted that movement has been exceptionally brisk for the apple, with 97 carloads of Pink Lady apples shipped in late January and 93 moved the first week of February.
