VOC's 2006 officers chosen
On Jan. 26, the Vidalia Onion Committee in Vidalia, GA, announced its 2006 committee members and officers. At the committee's monthly meeting held on Jan. 19, a representative of the USDA seated the members who were chosen during elections held in September 2005. The slate of elected members was approved by the secretary of agriculture.
According to the VOC, members seated are Ralph Cavender of Claxton, GA; Danny Ray of Glennville, GA; Kevin Hendrix of Metter, GA; C. Alan Sikes of Collins, GA; John Shuman of Reidsville, GA; Terry Gerrald of Statesboro, GA; Ronnie McLeod of Reidsville, GA; Michael Hively of Glennville, GA, and public member Otha Dixon of Vidalia, GA.
Alternates seated are Bo Herndon Jr. of Lyons, GA; Maurice Collins of Glennville, GA; Tina Cowart of Lyons, GA; William R. Berry III of Mount Vernon, GA; Paul Gore of Lyons, GA; Barbara P. Braddy of Mount Vernon, GA; Robert (Bobby) Rushing of Register, GA; and Alternate public member State Sen. Jack Hill of Reidsville, GA.
During the meeting, members of the committee elected officers for 2006. John Shuman was elected committee chairman, Mike Hively was elected vice-chairman and Danny Ray was re-elected secretary-treasurer. Wendy Brannen was reaffirmed as committee manager.
The Vidalia Onion Committee was established in 1989 as federal marketing order No. 955. The order authorizes production research, marketing research and development, and marketing promotion programs. The committee administers the order locally and consists of eight producer members and their alternates and one public member and an alternate.
