VBZ has increased volume of proprietary Sweet Sunshine green seedless grapes
Vincent B. Zaninovich & Sons in Richgrove, CA, which had its first commercial crop last year of a licensed proprietary green seedless grape variety called Sweet Sunshine, will have increased production of the variety this year, according to John Zaninovich, president of the company.
“We will start shipping” that variety “the week of the 21st of July, and our volume has increased from last year,” Zaninovich told The Produce News. “The quality is even better this year, and we are real excited about retail response and the good consumer response with that grape.”
The harvest of Sweet Sunshine will typically run through the end of August, he said.
Sweet Sunshine will be packed in the company’s “VBZ” label.
Zannovich described the Sweet Sunshine has having “a very large elongated berry that crunches like an apple.” The Brix reading can range from 19 to 22. “It just eats very well,” he said.
The variety was developed by International Fruit Genetics in Bakersfield, CA.
Other grape varieties offered by VBZ are “more generic,” Zaninovich said. Among them are Flame seedless, Thompson seedless, Summer Royal black seedless, Crimson seedless, Autumn Royal black seedless, Autumn King green seedless and the seeded Red Globes.
“We will have increased supplies of Scarlet Royal this year,” as well as increased supplies of Autumn King, Zaninovich said. “It looks like Crimson will be about the same as last year.”
The Sweet Sunshine will continue to increase in volume for VBZ in future seasons as young plantings come into fuller production.
