Val Verde back into onions, increases organic veg
McAllen, TX —“The demand of organics has been good. That is the reason for our expansion,” said Frank Schuster, president of Val Verde Vegetable Co. Inc.
“We are increasing our organic acreage by 50 percent; this year over last,” he continued.
Frank Schuster and his son, Kurt Schuster, outside the McAllen warehouse of Vale Verde Vegetable Co. Schuster’s other son, Max, is also involved in the business.“We are farther on the learning curve” for growing organic vegetables. “We are becoming more comfortable.”
Val Verde is using pasture land that has not been in crop production for seven years, which qualifies it for organic production.
Organic produce items coming from Val Verde this spring are green, red and Lacinato kale.
The firm is also producing green, red and rainbow Swiss chard, cilantro and red beets. “We’re trying a few other things that we may add,” Schuster said. “You have to learn how these products behave.”
This spring is Val Verde’s third season in returning to the Texas onion business.
“My son Max wanted to pursue onions. With a new onion line, we look forward to packing our own onions this year. In previous years, we used another shed.”
Schuster added that his company returned to handling a few Mexican onions when it re-entered the Texas onion deal.
It had been a dozen years since Val Verde was in the Mexican onion business.
In an early February interview with The Produce News, Schuster expected Mexican onions to start around March 1 and Texas onions to begin around April 1.
