United Supermarkets opens next-generation store in Amarillo
United Supermarkets opened the flagship of its next-generation United stores March 5 in Amarillo, TX. The 55,000-square-foot store features a totally new design, according to a news release. United has been operating stores in Amarillo since 1971.
“This is our first United location which reflects our new brand strategy,” said Monica Schierbaum, senior director of marketing for United Supermarkets in Lubbock, TX. “It is a bold statement and truly represents the United Supermarkets brand and what we stand for.”
The United floral department was designed to be simple, clean and functional to better serve customers.Several store features have never been seen in a United Supermarkets location before, including a walk-in clinic, a drive-through pharmacy and an indoor-outdoor dining area that can accommodate up to 190 guests.
“You’ll know this United is different the moment you walk in,” said Wes Jackson, the company’s chief merchandising officer. “Fresh produce and floral welcome you right as you enter the store.”
Bradley Gaines, director of floral for United Supermarkets, told The Produce News the new store has a full-service floral department, open seven days a week, with delivery and wire service available.
“The design of the floral department is clean and simple, like the rest of the store,” Gaines said. “The design also allows for expansion of the floral area during the holiday season.”
The floral department specializes in simple and straightforward floral designs using mostly flowers without a lot of greens, he added.
“Bouquets and consumer bunches are presented by color blocks in both the cooler and the open displays,” said Gaines. “Everything is set up to make it easy for our customers.”
The landmark of the United store is a large, stylized tree branching over the entire produce department.
“The tree welcomes our guests when they enter the store and defines the produce area as a space that is warm and inviting,” Jackson said in the news release.
In addition to grand opening ceremony comments by Robert Taylor, president of United Supermarkets, United representatives donated $50,000 to High Plains Food Bank’s operation of Kids Café, which provides free meals and snacks to low-income children in the Amarillo community.
United Supermarkets is a Texas-based grocery chain with stores in 31 markets across north and west Texas. United currently operates 60 stores under four unique brands. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Albertson’s LLC.
