BRASELTON, GA — The Southeast Produce Council's board of directors met Wednesday morning, June 17, at Chateau Elan, here, to conduct business, as SPC members arrived to take part in a silent auction that evening and to participate the following day in the inaugural SPC Charity Golf Classic, all in the name of charity.
"We had a very productive meeting," David Sherrod, assistant executive director of the council, told The Produce News
At the Southeast Produce Council's first Charity Golf Classic were David Sherrod, the council's assistant executive director; SPC President Andrew Scott; and Tom Page, a founder and former president of the council. The board heard various committee reports, including for the Southeast Training Education Program for Upcoming Produce Professionals, known as the STEP-UPP program, and the Southeast Top Agricultural Recruits Scholarship program, known as STARS. Sherrod noted that the council has given about $54,000 in scholarships to 27 recipients so far this year.
The board also went over the council's financials, "which are strong," declared Sherrod. "Jennifer and Terry are running a tight ship," he added, referring to Jennifer Pierce, office manager, and Terry Vorhees, executive director.
The board also discussed some upcoming events, including the annual fall conference, which is scheduled to take place Sept. 25-27 at the Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris, GA.
About 130 people are in attendance at Chateau Elan, and on Thursday, about 100 golfers are expected to participate in the SPC Charity Golf Classic. All proceeds from the silent auction and golf tournament will go to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
