SPC adds Supply Chain Summit to fall conference
The Southeast Produce Council has added a new workshop to its annual fall conference designed to enhance its value for all attendees.
The new component is a Supply Chain Summit, which will feature a panel discussion by guest speakers representing each channel in the supply chain process, including conventional retailers, mass marketers, wholesalers, foodservice distributors, growers, shippers and those in transportation, according to information on the council's web site.
Ronnie L. De La Cruz will moderate the new workshop, which will then become "part of the fall conference every year," SPC Executive Director Terry Vorhees told The Produce News Wednesday, June 13.
In addition to tackling the leading issues of the day, the panel of industry leaders (to be announced in the near future) will also take impromptu questions from the audience and will share the latest trends and opportunities associated with their respective parts of the supply chain.
"Each year we've been trying to add value as far as the educational segment of this conference is concerned," said Mr. Vorhees. "I think that adding this Supply Chain Summit and to continue to have this at the fall conference year" goes a long way in accomplishing that.
About 110 people attended last year's fall conference, according to Mr. Vorhees, who is expecting that number to jump to at least 150 this year. The Supply Chain Summit is only one part of an exciting program planned for the conference, which will take place Sept. 28-29 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC.
Following a board of directors meeting and committee meetings from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 28, the new Supply Chain Summit will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A sponsors VIP reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by the president's reception from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the president's dinner dance from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
One highlight of Saturday's events will be the seventh annual Ken Lanhardt Memorial Golf Tournament, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those going on the spouse tour, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will visit Childress Vineyards, where they will be treated to a tour of the vineyards, wine tasting and lunch.
The conference will conclude with the "ultimate tailgate party" Saturday night from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The election of officers and directors also takes place at the fall conference, since the council was originally formed in September 1999. In fact, after next year's fall conference, possibly in Birmingham, AL, the council will return to last year's venue -- the Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris, GA -- for its 2009 fall conference, where it will celebrate its 10-year anniversary.
The 2009 conference may be expanded by one extra day to allow ample time to celebrate that milestone, Mr. Vorhees said.
