South African citrus at Gloucester Marine Terminal
The Gloucester Marine Terminal will be receiving the bulk of the South African citrus volume again this year, according to Tom Holt III, who handles business development for the family-owned Holt Logistics Corp.
Holt said the Gloucester Terminal, located on the Delaware River shore of Gloucester City, NJ, will receive 10 or 11 South African citrus ships in 2014, depending on citrus markets. The ships carrying this break bulk produce are carried by ships belonging to Seatrade, which has an exclusive two-year agreement to run this South African reefer program to Gloucester.
This season’s first refrigerated South African citrus ship, the Green Italia, discharged at the Gloucester Marine Terminal on June 23. And, this year Holt is trans-shipping bonded citrus to Canada from Gloucester.
Leo Holt, president of Holt Logistics Corp., said, “The South Africans are great friends. Over the last 15 years we had the opportunity and privilege to get to know them and develop not only a business relationship but also a personal one. This is one of the great dividends of being in international trade. It brings together people from opposite sides in the world and creates lifelong and cherished friendships like the one we now share with the South Africans.”
According to The Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum, South Africa first shipped citrus to the United States in 1999.
