SALINAS SCENE: Motorcycle drawing will benefit First Candle
SALINAS SCENE: Motorcycle drawing will benefit First Candle
Rocker Sammy Hagar and famed motorcycle customizer Arlen Ness are teaming up to raise awareness and funds among motorcycle enthusiasts in support of First Candle, one of the nation's leading charities dedicated to infant survival.
A one-of-a-kind motorcycle has been customized by Mr. Ness with original artwork by Mr. Hagar and will be included in a national drawing to benefit First Candle.
The one-of-a kind motorcycle made its debut at the Produce Marketing Association's Foodservice Conference & Exposition in Monterey, CA. The cycle was scheduled to be in the lobby of the Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay on Sunday, July 16, after which it will embark on a national tour. Representatives from First Candle were scheduled to be on hand. Tickets for an opportunity to win the bike will be sold, generating funds for SIDS research. The drawing will take place Dec. 9 at Arlen Ness Headquarters in Dublin, CA.
The bike will be on display at the upcoming California Salinas Rodeo July 19-20, the Red Bull Moto Grand Prix at Laguna Seca in Monterey July 21-23, at the Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota, as well as at Mr. Hagar's upcoming concerts and many other events throughout California and Nevada.
"The Red Rocker Chopper" -- which borrows Mr. Hagar's nickname, the "Red Rocker" -- is valued at $70,000.
Margaret D'Arrigo-Martin, executive vice president of D'Arrigo Bros. Co. of California and a board member of First Candle SIDS Alliance, spearheaded this project. In 2003, Ms. D'Arrigo-Martin and her husband, Steve Martin, lost their six-and-a-half-week-old infant daughter to sudden infant death syndrome, a diagnosis given for the sudden and unexpected death of a baby who seems perfectly healthy.
Ms. D'Arrigo-Martin has been involved with the First Candle SIDS Alliance since 2003 and this year became chairman of its development committee. She and her husband created the idea for the motorcycle benefit drawing and she marshaled the tour project through - including bringing the cycle to PMA.
"Steve's a big motorcycle enthusiast," Ms. D'Arrigo-Martin said. "He has an Arlen Ness cycle."
Ms. D'Arrigo-Martin said that in addition to her role with the First Candle SIDS Alliance, she "needed to do something" in memory of her late daughter.
When the Martins approached Mr. Ness to see if he would build and donate a bike for a First Candle SIDS benefit, he graciously agreed. Mr. Hagar also agreed to play a role in the benefit. "As a father of four children, I would do anything to help prevent the tragedy of SIDS and stillbirth in the United States," Mr. Hagar said.
Tickets for the drawing will be made available at the aforementioned shows and on-line at www.firstcandle.org, with a suggested donation of $10 per ticket or three tickets for a $25 donation. Complete details and rules of the drawing can be found at www.firstcandle.org.
Salinas Valley CWA to host agroterrorism seminar The Salinas Valley chapter of California Women for Agriculture will host an agroterrorism awareness seminar from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 12 at the Agricultural Commissioner/UCCE Conference Room at 1428 Abbott St. in Salinas.
The seminar is being held to increase awareness of agroterroism in the agricultural community.
The agroterrorism awareness program is for growers, shippers and pest-control advisors. This introductory hands-on workshop will provide training on agroterrorism and an opportunity to learn about agricultural biosecurity and emerging plant diagnostic and control systems.
The meeting will present concepts and practical principles of awareness, preparedness, diagnostics, identification of high-risk pests and diseases and help local front-line agribusiness with hands-on and practical training scenarios.
The session will explore both the potential impacts of agroterrorism from a food safety and defense perspective and lessons in understanding counter-terrorism as well as hands-on training for first detectors.
Speakers will include specialists with the Food & Drug Administration and representatives from the University of California at Davis and the UC Cooperative Extension in Salinas. For more information, go to www.salinascwa.org.
