Redner's executive found dead at home
A Pennsylvania retail executive was killed March 9.
Gary Redner, 55, was found March 10 beaten to death at his Lower Heidelberg Township residence in State Hill, PA, near Reading, PA. Mr. Redner was the executive vice president of procurement for Redner's Warehouse Markets Inc. He had worked for 38 years for the company, which was founded by his parents, Earl Redner of Wyomissing, PA, and the late Mary (Germond) Redner.
As of March 18, no details of the homicide investigation had been released. Eric White, consumer communications specialist for Redner's, said that the company would not comment on the investigation until authorities had concluded their work.
According to a Redner's press release, Mr. Redner loved playing the drums, having first picked up a pair of sticks at age 10. He played backup for Bruce Springsteen, and after taking some time off, he played in the Philadelphia area for the past two years. He was a master griller and loved his dog, Tucker.
He was born in Queens, NY, and was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Whitfield, PA.
Mr. Redner is survived by his former wife, Deborah L. (Kerr) Redner; his son, Gary M., husband of Janie A. (Hitscherich) Redner; and his daughter, Casey L. Redner.
He also is survived by his brother, Richard, husband of Elaine Redner; and his sister, Chere, widow of Richard Kelley. He additionally had two grandchildren, Kerr Redner and Kayla Redner, and Gary M. and his wife, Janie Redner, are expecting another child.
Mr. White said that Mr. Redner "was very well-liked and a very personable person. Everybody here liked him a lot. He epitomized our operational philosophy. He was very hands-on. If he was working on a weekend and on- call, like everyone else, it was not above him to fill his car and run to a store if they needed an order.
"He had a very, very strong work ethic, too. He was second to none," Mr. White added. "I start at 6:00 in the morning, and he was always here before me."
Mr. Redner began his career as a meat cutter, later becoming meat manager at the company's second store in Red Hill, PA, and later at various stores within the company.
In 1980, he was charged with the management of Redner's first distribution center in Reading, PA, and began training as a meat and produce buyer. Within a short time, he became the sole purchasing agent for meat and produce. In 1990, he was named executive vice president and served as secretary for Redner's board of directors.
His brother, Richard, also of Lower Heidelberg Township, is president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors.
