Quebec celebrates potato varieties
More than 150 potato producers turned out to participate in the inaugural “Day of Varieties” Aug. 15. Quebec Parmentier organized the event in collaboration with its partners.
A first in Quebec, the day’s events were primarily dedicated to celebrating the multitude of potato varieties, 112 of which were on display — ranging from rose fingerling potatoes, creamy purples and running the gamut of white, yellow and red potato varieties.
In the morning, buyers were invited and introduced to new and promising varieties that will soon be made available for market. “It was an excellent opportunity to discuss business opportunities with our customers,” stated Pierre Chouinard, president and chief executive officer of Quebec Parmentier. “Presenting the varieties that are about to be marketed is of interest for those who want to stand out, develop new markets and consolidate their market share.”
During the course of the afternoon, potato growers were invited for their chance to peruse the multitude of varieties on display. A demonstration was offered on the techniques used in selecting the most promising varieties. The event drew potato growers from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba and the United States.
Julien Rivard, president of Quebec Parmentier, stated in a release, “The potato is developed through niche markets and consequently Parmentier Quebec wants to offer producers and industry alternatives to older varieties and thereby help make the potato industry more competitive.”
Founded in 2012, Quebec Parmentier has 33 members that include family farms in seed and table potato production, potato processing, as well as producer-packers representing multiple regions in Quebec. A collaboration between various links in the potato network, the group joined together to form a value-added chain and provide one point of access to meet customer needs. Various agreements in place allow producers to gain access to new varieties. According to a release, it is the largest potato marketing organization in Quebec with production of 2,428 hectares and storage and packaging capacity of 1.3 million quintals. Québec Parmentier consists of two subsidiaries: SEQ Marketing coordinates commercial activities for seed potatoes, while Propur handles commercial activities for table potatoes.
