Administration officials agree to look at how it releases pesticide residue data

WASHINGTON -- Obama administration officials have agreed to look into how it packages the release of annual pesticide data, which can be "misused" by consumer groups to trumpet fruit and vegetables as unsafe to eat, according to Ray Gilmer, vice president of communications for the United Fresh Produce Association.

Philip K. Smith, co-founder of Interfresh Inc., a national supplier of fruits and vegetables in Orange, CA, died at his home Sunday, Oct. 17, with his family at his side following a long illness. He was 83.

Eurofresh Farms converts facility to cucumbers

Eurofresh Farms, a year-round producer and marketer of greenhouse-grown tomatoes and cucumbers based in Willcox, AZ, and Snowflake, AZ, has converted its Snowflake operations to produce cucumber varietals exclusively. More than 44 acres of long English cucumbers and mini-cucumbers will be grown and packaged in the town.

Curry & Co. adds Vidalia sweet carrots

Curry & Co. is adding Vidalia sweet carrots to its product line, which currently features onions, sweet onions, potatoes and blueberries.

The carrots are grown, processed and packed in Statesboro, GA, at the 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art onion facility that Curry & Co. recently purchased from Gerrald Farms (see story on page 146). The facility attained certification from Primus, Davis Fresh and Silliker, and is in compliance with HACCP guidelines.

Like Vidalia onions, there are only select growing districts where Vidalia sweet carrots can be grown.
