Across the United States, growers and food businesses face a persistent contradiction. The nation produces more than enough food for every household, with an estimated 92 billion pounds of surplus food generated annually. Much of this product is fresh, safe and nutritious, but without efficient recovery systems, it risks never reaching families who need it. This unfortunate reality contributes to the nearly 48 million people, including more than 14 million children, experiencing food insecurity. 

The U.S. National Technical Working Group for GLOBALG.A.P. appointed Marianna Solorio, director of food safety and quality assurance at Bonipak Produce, as its new chairperson. Solorio assumed the role Jan. 22. Solorio succeeds long-standing chairperson Walter Ram of The Giumarra Cos.

GLOBALG.A.P. national technical working groups provide opportunities for producers, retailers, certification bodies, food safety and sustainability experts, and other stakeholders to support the GLOBALG.A.P. certification system.

 The world is facing a persistent health crisis. Chronic non-communicable diseases — such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer — are the leading causes of death and disability globally.

The Kroger Co. appointed Greg Foran as CEO, effective immediately. Foran will also join Kroger's board of directors and succeeds Ron Sargent, who served as interim CEO since March 2025. This announcement follows an extensive search process conducted by the board to identify an innovative retail leader with a strong track record of execution at scale.

The Southeast Produce Council announced the recipients of the 2026 Vorhees Vision Scholarship, an award created to recognize and support young individuals who demonstrate a strong entrepreneurial spirit while pursuing their educational goals.

The Vorhees Vision Scholarship honors the legacy of the late Terry L. Vorhees, founder and first executive director of the Southeast Produce Council. Through his vision and leadership, SEPC became — and remains — one of the produce industry’s most valuable resources for education, networking and professional growth.
