Peri & Sons launches Onions All Year program
Yerington, NV-based Peri & Sons Farms has expanded its Nevada operations into Firebaugh, CA, with a multi-million-dollar, first-phase packaging and storage facility to accommodate a new trademarked year-round onion program that has been dubbed Onions All Year.
The 12-month deal comes nearly 30 years after David Peri started his farm in Nevada in 1979 at age 21.
Tim Cummings, marketing and public relations director at Peri & Sons, said that Mr. Peri "knew there were great opportunities in the onion business, and his continued belief in the industry has given him the drive to expand his Nevada farming operations into California."
Mr. Peri said that the decision to expand came from retail demand. "Supermarket retail buyers have a tough job," Mr. Peri said. "They are responsible for providing their shoppers with quality white, red, yellow and sweet onions each and every day. Unfortunately there's not always a quality onion available, so buyers are stuck with buying the best they can find."
Mr. Peri went on to say, "Our goal is to make an onion buyer's job easier by growing and packaging consistent premium-quality onions at an affordable price all year."
Retail customers can now expect a full line of white, yellow, red and sweet onions that will be grown and packaged under the company's "commitment to quality" specs at both the Nevada and California operations.
Mr. Cummings said that onions will be shipped from the Nevada packaging facilities from September through April, and the California facilities will ship from May through August.
"The Onions All Year program is beginning with good momentum," Mr. Cummings said in late September. "Our exclusive sweet onion, 'Sweetie Sweet,' is aggressively gaining market share, and our organic label, 'Mother's Love,' is gaining new retail orders each week."
He added that the Nevada new crop is "yielding great quality in high volumes, and the California expansion is on track for spring 2008. I guess the most encouraging thing about the Onions All Year program is that our retail partners are just as excited as we are."
The company's dedication to food safety resulted in a Superior rating again this year for the Nevada operation, the third consecutive such rating from third-party auditor Scientific Certifications Systems.
Mr. Cummings said, "The California packaging and storage operation will also be state of the art in order to maintain an excellent food safety environment."
