Pear conditioning program continues to gain in popularity for Rainier Fruit
The conditioned pear program offered by Rainier Fruit Co. to its retail partners continues to gain traction in the marketplace. “We set record monthly and season shipments of conditioned pears this season,” said Director of Marketing Suzanne Wolter. “We believe it’s a real testament to the appeal for both retailers and consumers, given the extremely large apple crop that’s just now finishing up.”
The company is located in Yakima, WA, and is recognized as one of the state’s premiere tree fruit producers. Rainier grows and markets a full conventional pear manifest and also produces organic Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou, Starkrimson, Red D’Anjou and Forelle pear varieties.
The harvest began in early August. “The growing season has been exceptional, and all indications point towards a very good crop of pears this 2014 season,” Wolter told The Produce News. “We will have excellent quality and a good run of sizes available.
“Bartlett and Starkrimson will be available the first week of August, followed by D’Anjou, Bosc and Red D’Anjou the end of the month. We’ll be in full pear harvest by the latter part of August this year.”
Pear volume in 2014 for the Pacific Northwest will be down this season when compared to 2013. Wolter said decreases with individual pear varieties grown and marketed by Rainier will mirror state trends.
The company continues to focus pear movement to domestic customers as well as those found in Mexico and Canada.
Looking at social media, Rainier has become much more active since the beginning of this year, gaining new friends and followers each week.
“Consumers are really hungry for information about our growing operations,” said Rainier’s Communications Manager Erin Smith. “Our posts with the most engagement have included farming facts-seeing our process in action, especially out in the field. Consumers also seem to enjoy posts that introduce them to the people who are responsible for producing their food.”
