Overflow crowd attends FPFC luncheon
Well over 200 industry members packed into the Sheraton in Cerritos, CA, for the Oct. 7 membership luncheon meeting of the Fresh Produce & Floral Council. Featured speaker Margi Prueitt, who is the executive director of the Produce Marketing Association Foundation for Industry Talent, updated the crowd on the programs of that organization.
She said the mission of that 10-year-old arm of PMA is to "attract, develop and retain talent for the produce industry." It accomplishes these three separate goals through a variety of programs. To "attract" new people into the industry, PMA created its Career Pathways Program, which includes seven different regional efforts in partnership with 30 different universities.
The development part of the program includes several different efforts for current industry members, including programs for emerging leaders, mainstream managers, top executives and women in the produce industry. The retention end of the three-headed approach is currently in development state. Prueitt said look for specific programs in this area in 2016.
