Organic watermelon growth is steep
RIO RICO, AZ — Conventional watermelon sales of SunFed Produce, LLC, outnumber by a ten-to-one ration the volume of the firm’s “SunFed Perfect Organic” watermelon brand, according to Matt Mandel, who handles sales and marketing for the family owned firm.
While SunFed’s conventional watermelon program is “doing very, very well,” the organic watermelon label is enjoying a much faster growth rate.
Matt Mandel in the board room of SunFed Produce, LLC, in Rio Rico, AZ.Mandel said the cost of organic watermelons is a key driver for demand. The cost of organic melons “could be near to conventional, or much higher. The closer they are in price to conventional it will drive a larger consumer base.”
He added, “Organics are no longer cost prohibitive. The organic industry has come a long way as a whole.”
“You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between our conventional and organic watermelons if you didn’t (already) know,” Mandel said. “We make it look easy, but it’s hard work for a lot of people going into it that makes it happen.”
SunFed ships Mexican watermelons from October through mid-June. “It’s important to remain in the market,” Mandel said.
“You keep your name and face in the market so the buyers can rely on you day in and day out,” he continued. “The buyers want a quality supplier who can take care of their needs all the time. We don’t want to make buying be more complex than necessary.”
