Avocado Queen strengthens California presence
Avocado Queen specializes in premium avocados, distributing fresh avocados to all regions of the United States, including the West Coast, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.
“As we head into spring, one of the most exciting developments for our company is that we continue to grow our alliance with California growers, further strengthening our position as a leading distributor,” said Natalia Merienne, founder of the San Diego-based company. “This vertical integration is very important to us because it allows us to have greater control over quality consistency and supply.”
For many years, Avocado Queen has worked closely with growers in Mexico and expanding its California production is a natural evolution of the business.
“It strengthens our ability to provide avocados year-round while also supporting the domestic deal,” Merienne said. “California avocados are extremely important to our program because they complement our year-round sourcing strategy. As both growers and distributors, we see California fruit as a premium seasonal offering that resonates strongly with consumers who value local production.”
The California season also allows the company to strengthen partnerships with retailers who want to highlight domestic fruit during the spring and summer months.
“Our company works with avocados across multiple regions including Mexico, California, Peru and Colombia, which allows us to maintain a consistent supply throughout the year,” Merienne said. “Over time, our business has evolved from primarily distribution into a more vertically integrated model where we now participate directly in production as growers. This evolution has helped us improve quality control strengthen grower partnerships and better support the needs of our customers.”
The avocado category itself has continued to increase significantly over the years as consumers increasingly see avocados as a healthy everyday staple rather than an occasional item and Avocado Queen has taken advantage of that growth.
“Success in the avocado category requires reliable supply strong quality management and long-term relationships,” Merienne said. “Avocados are a delicate fruit, so success depends on understanding every part of the supply chain from the farm to the consumer including harvest, logistics, ripening and merchandising. Companies that truly understand the crop and maintain strong partnerships with both growers and customers tend to succeed in this category.”
Reflecting on the upcoming California season, Merienne noted it looks promising with strong demand expected as the spring and summer months approach.
“Compared to last year, we anticipate continued strong consumer interest in avocados especially as retailers promote seasonal domestic fruit,” she said. “California avocados tend to generate excitement in the market particularly when retailers highlight their local origin.”
Avocado Queen’s customers include retailers, wholesalers and foodservice partners across the United States and internationally.
“The secret to strong partnerships is trust transparency and communication,” Merienne said. “The produce industry moves quickly so reliability and responsiveness are critical. Our goal is always to build long term relationships where both sides can grow together.
She sees one of the biggest opportunities for growth in continuing to build brands within the avocado category.
“Consumers increasingly want to know where their food comes from how it was grown and who produced it,” Merienne said. “By connecting the story of the grower with the consumer we believe there is significant opportunity to create stronger loyalty and long-term growth.”
Some of the biggest challenges in the industry that the company deals with include logistics, costs, supply fluctuations and the complexity of global sourcing.
“We address these challenges by diversifying our sourcing regions maintaining strong grower relationships and staying flexible so we can adapt quickly to changing market conditions,” Merienne said.
Retailers, she noted can increase avocado sales by focusing on consistent quality proper ripening programs and strong merchandising.
“Avocados perform best when they are displayed prominently and when consumers understand ripeness and usage,” she said. “Cross merchandising with items such as tomatoes limes and tortillas as well as clear messaging about origin can significantly increase sales.”
